Overview
Education
in Barnet can be a controversial subject
at times but we've tried to be as dispassionate
as possible in our coverage. There has
recently been a major disagreement over
selection in schools and Barnet is home
to three of the nation's top grammar schools.
Whatever your view it is clear that the
overall standard of education provision
in the borough is outstanding. Measured
by the the results achieved by local primaries
at Key Stage 2 the borough as a whole
ranked 17th in the country.
We've tried to give
you a guide to the schools in the area
but nobody can give a greater insight
than the parents, teachers and pupils
of those schools so please contact us
with any views at Schools@barnettoday.co.uk.
We
do make reference to the league tables
of exam results. We know you are
aware that these can give a very inaccurate
representation of a school.

Local
State Primaries
The
local primary schools in Barnet, Totteridge,
Whetstone and North Finchley are almost
universally of a high standard.
The
Borough average was the 17th highest
in the country for 1999 and most of
the schools in the area covered by this
site are above that average.
|
None of the schools could
be described as doing really
badly and where they have
fallen below the average
a high proportion of pupils
with special educational
needs on the roll suggests
there is no problem with
the standard of teaching.
Denominational
schools tend to do better
but not universally.
They achieve results well
ahead of the national averages

Local
State Secondaries
|
By
and large the local secondary
schools are of a high standard.
According to some yard sticks
Queen Elizabeth for boys is
the top state school in the
country outperforming Eton in
the exam
tables. Along with St. Michaels
they are selective on entry
which means they take a majority
of pupils from outside the area. |
